RATHERT STADIUM GETS MATRIX® SYNTHETIC TURF

AUSTIN, TEXAS – 02-15-2019 (PRDistribution.com) — Historic Rathert Stadium in Junction City, Kansas will once again be known as the “finest baseball stadium in Kansas” with installation of Matrix turf. Hellas Construction is leveling the playing field, adding new drainage, and installing its premium synthetic turf specially-designed for baseball. It is the second infield upgrade in the stadium’s 81-year history. In 2000, the infield changed to lava rock.

Junction City Brigade General Manager Cecil Aska said, “Lava rock is messy when it gets wet and compacts and hardens when it dries. Before every game, you have to work at it to loosen it up. Players had to wear sliding pants for protection. Turf will reduce all the rainout headaches, look nicer, be smoother, and have a more consistent play.”
From ground balls, to crucial stops, slides, and runs, Matrix turf emulates the play of natural grass and clay. Unmatched durability and reliability from Matrix monofilament fibers, along with Hellas’ design specifications and custom installation makes Matrix the perfect choice for baseball fields nationwide.
“The high school players are pumped about the turf,” Aska said. “Our head coach now uses it as a recruiting tool for our summer collegiate league. We recruit players from all over the country.” Rathert Stadium is home to the Junction City Blue Jays, the Junction City American Legion Flames, and the Junction City Brigade Summer Collegiate Team. “Rathert Stadium is a destination. People put it on their bucket list to someday watch a game here,” said Aska.
Named after City Engineer Arthur Rathert, this stadium still stands as it was built in 1937, using Roosevelt’s New Deal Works Progress Administration. Only an additional section of stands, concessions, and restrooms have been added. This architectural landmark built of limestone is circular-shaped, with wood bleachers, wood fencing, and grillwork on the back for better airflow.
“I have a lot of great memories,” Aska said. I grew up next door and climbed the fence to play. When the Kansas City Monarchs played, we ran to the store for them, so they let us sit on the bench to watch the game. A lot of bigtime ball players played here. It’s a cool atmosphere and the turf will just add to it.”
