USA – 02-28-2019 (PRDistribution.com) — Previews at Showplace Antiques + Design Center

February 18th through March 3rd

Auctions at Showplace is excited to present items from the Estate of Architect Hugh Hardy (American, 1932-2017), one of New York City’s most influential builders whose legacy can be seen in many of our most cherished cultural institutions.

Hardy was entrusted with many high-profile restorations and renovations to iconic venues such as Radio City Music Hall, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the New Victory Theatre and the New Amsterdam Theatre and was also the architect who built the Claire Tow Theatre atop Eero Saarinen’s Vivian Beaumont Theatre at Lincoln Center.

As a collector, Hardy’s refined and varied taste ranged from fine art photographs to oil paintings, American furniture to English silver, and of course mid-century modern design. Highlights include a John Gadsby Chapman (American, 1808-1890) panoramic oil on canvas, “Harvest on the Roman Compagna,” a Telemacho Signorini (Italian, 1835-1901) Tuscan landscape, and a collection of contemporary photographs by Evelyn Hofer. This sale is a rare opportunity to acquire items from the collection of this dynamic, contemporary figure.

The sale will feature many exquisite 19th century decorative arts including a handsome pair of French Rococo manner gilt-bronze nautilus shell vases with nude figurative sculptures depicting Poseidon and the sea-queen Amphitrite. Other richly appointed decorative arts include two Neoclassical white marble and ormolu clocks, a pair of Sevres hand-painted porcelain and bronze urns, a pair of large Neoclassical manner bronze and black marble urns, a collection of gilt bronze candlesticks and other vessels.

Highlights in Continental furniture include a pair of French Rococo carved giltwood open armchairs, an Anglo-Indian repoussé silver-clad throne chair with peacock, lion, and other fauna and flora motifs, a  Jean-Francois Coulon Louis XV marble top bombé commode, a pair of Spanish Neoclassical side chairs with elaborate winged figure carving, and a pair of Regency black and gilt armchairs. An antique Syrian commode features meticulously detailed mother of pearl inlay, while an Austrian brass chandelier is ornately dressed in rock crystal beads and drops.

Strong offerings in Judaica include a silver Karah Passover Pesach Seder set, a mid-century modern sterling Menorah/Hanukkiah, an assortment of cast aluminum and bronze sculptural menorahs by Oded Halahmy (Iraqi/Israeli, b. 1928), a Torah Ark cover in blue velvet with gold embroidery, and other silver items including Kiddush cups and a Yad Torah pointer.

A rare set of Bulgari “Eccentrica” sterling silver flatware and servingware will be offered comprising 112 pieces over eight different lots. The largest of these includes 68 pieces of the elegant Italian mid-century flatware and its original storage chest. Silver enthusiasts will find Hugh Hardy’s diverse collection of English and Continental tableware, a Reed and Barton five piece tea service, and 74 pieces of Oneida “Young Love” heirloom flatware.

Bringing fashion and flair to the sale is a collection of ladies’ couture and accessories with designers such as Alexander McQueen, Gianni Versace, Donna Karan, Albert Nipon, Lanvin, Charles Jourdan, Emilio Pucci and others. The garments pair well with a wide array of costume jewelry, scarves, and handbags including a group of three art glass necklaces, one resembling red coral and another with Gio Ponti/Venini manner blown glass pendants.

Other exciting items include four hand-colored etchings depicting Russian scenes by Benjamin Patersson (Swedish, 1748-1815), an Empire flame mahogany veneer sofa with whimsical tiger and cheetah upholstery, two large carved wood soldiers with polychrome decoration, a group of tabletop bronze sculptures, art glass and porcelain including a Lalique “Bamako” lizard bowl, and much more.
