Long Beach Chorale & Chamber Orchestra presents Franz Joseph Haydn’s Mass in Time of War on March 23, 24

LONG BEACH, CA – 03-05-2019 (PRDistribution.com) — The title sounds scary, but the music of the Mass in Time of War is vintage Haydn: buoyant, exciting, humorous, and entertaining from start to finish. The 71 voices of the Chorale are joined by our professional orchestra and soloists Marlissa Hudson, Alexandra Rupp, David Morales, and David Stoneman for a performance of this always-popular masterwork, which the LBC will also perform this June at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

The work will be performed on Saturday, March 23, at 7:00 p.m. and on Sunday, March 24 at 4:00 p.m. at Grace First Presbyterian Church, 3955 N. Studebaker Rd., Long Beach. Tickets are available at www.longbeachchorale.org or (562) 427-1931. Haydn wrote Mass in the Time of War in 1796, as his native Austria prepared anxiously for the possibility of invasion—and though the drumbeats of war are present in the music, Haydn’s confidence in the triumph of peace shines through even more brightly. Also part of the concert will be a performance of Augusta Read Thomas’s Plea for Peace sung by soprano Marlissa Hudson, this work is a brief but exceptionally moving and meditative piece written in 2017 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Chicago Pile-1 nuclear reactor. The reactor, the world’s first human-made self-sustaining nuclear reaction, was created as part of the Manhattan Project in 1942 by Enrico Fermi, which he labeled “a crude pile of black bricks and wooden timbers.”  Thomas’s music invites us to consider the complicated and conflicting nature of such a creation, as it represents both the boundlessness of human ingenuity and the perils of playing at destruction. The Chorale’s June performance in New York is the group’s second trip to Carnegie Hall in three years, as they participated in the Carnegie premiere of Kirke Mechem’s cantata Songs of the Slave in June 2017.For more information please contact the Long Beach Chorale at (562) 427-1931, visit the website at www.LongBeachChorale.org, or email, [email protected].About the Long Beach Chorale
Founded in 1988 by former director Mark Barville, and led since September 2003 by Eliza Rubenstein, the LBCCO is celebrating its 30th anniversary. An important fixture of the Long Beach arts scene, the Chorale has performed many of the great works of Western classical music and has appeared at the legendary Carnegie Hall; Aquarium of the Pacific; Long Beach Museum of Art, Rancho Los Alamitos; and Carpenter Performing Arts Center, as well as having performed with the Long Beach Opera. The Chorale’s musical repertoire is globally inspired – embodying the middle ages to contemporary influences. The LBCCO is Long Beach’s only all-volunteer community masterworks chorus; all LBCCO members are volunteers motivated by their love of singing. Our motto “Great Music, Up Close” reflects our commitment to presenting masterworks in a welcoming setting and at an accessible price. We pride ourselves on working within the Long Beach community to offer under-served music lovers the opportunity to experience live classical music. Auditions for singers in each voice part are held regularly. To learn more about auditioning visit www.LongBeachChorale.org for more information. The LBCCO is supported by Grace Note, an auxiliary group of non-singing volunteers who host our receptions and provide other forms of much-needed and much-appreciated assistance.
