The title sounds scary, but the music of the Mass in Time of War is vintage Haydn: buoyant, exciting, humorous, and entertaining from start to finish. The 71 voices of the Chorale are joined by our professional orchestra and soloists Marlissa Hudson, Alexandra Rupp, David Morales, and David Stoneman for a performance of this always-popular masterwork, which the LBC will also perform this June at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
The work will be performed on Saturday, March 23, at 7:00 p.m. and on Sunday, March 24 at 4:00 p.m. at Grace First Presbyterian Church, 3955 N. Studebaker Rd., Long Beach. Haydn wrote Mass in the Time of War in 1796, as his native Austria prepared anxiously for the possibility of invasion—and though the drumbeats of war are present in the music, Haydn’s confidence in the triumph of peace shines through even more brightly. Also part of the concert will be a performance of Augusta Read Thomas’s Plea for Peace sung by soprano Marlissa Hudson, this work is a brief but exceptionally moving and meditative piece written in 2017 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Chicago Pile-1 nuclear reactor. The reactor, the world’s first human-made self-sustaining nuclear reaction, was created as part of the Manhattan Project in 1942 by Enrico Fermi, which he labeled “a crude pile of black bricks and wooden timbers.” Thomas’s music invites us to consider the complicated and conflicting nature of such a creation, as it represents both the boundlessness of human ingenuity and the perils of playing at destruction.The Chorale’s June performance in New York is the group’s second trip to Carnegie Hall in three years, as they participated in the Carnegie premiere of Kirke Mechem’s cantata Songs of the Slave in June 2017.For more information please contact the Long Beach Chorale at (562) 427-1931, visit the website at www.LongBeachChorale.org, or email, [email protected].About the Long Beach Chorale
