Dr. David Fetterman selected as Top Anthropologist of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP)

New York – 03-07-2019 (PRDistribution.com) — Dr. David Fetterman, President and CEO, Fetterman & Associates, an international evaluation consulting firm; past president of the American Evaluation Association, Author/editor of 17 books including Ethnography: Step by Step and founder of Empowerment Evaluation (self-assessment approach used in 16 countries), was just recently selected as Top Anthropologist of the Year for 2019 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for his outstanding leadership in and commitment to the field. 

While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. With over 4 decades of professional experience in Anthropology and as a faculty member and administrator at Stanford University for over 25 years, Dr. Fetterman has established himself as an extraordinary professional and expert in the field.  Dr. Fetterman is a dynamic, results-driven leader who has demonstrated success not only as President of Fetterman & Associates, but also as a Professor and Research Director at the California Institute of Integral Studies, and faculty member in the School of Business and Leadership at the University of Charleston and Visiting Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at San Jose State University. His impressive repertoire is highlighted by his prior roles, included serving as Director of Evaluation in the School of Medicine at Stanford University, Director of the Master’s Program in Policy Analysis and Evaluation in the School of Education at Stanford University, Consulting Professor in the School of Education at Stanford University, Professor & Research Director for California Institute of Integral Studies, Senior Researcher at RMC Research and Principal Research Scientist at the American Institutes for Research.   His key areas of expertise are in higher education, medical education, environmental health and safety, programs for dropouts and gifted children, empowerment evaluation, and organizational learning and development. 

In his role at Fetterman & Associates Dr. Fetterman, conducts domestic and international evaluations. He is involved with projects that range from a $15 million Hewlett-Packard Digital Village project to small townships in South Africa.  He has also provided evaluation consultation services for Google, the WK Kellogg Foundation, tobacco prevention projects in the state of Arkansas, Knight Foundation programs for journalists, and entrepreneurship programs for at-risk students in the United States.  

Dr. Fetterman received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Anthropology and Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from the University of Connecticut where he graduated summa cum laude, his two Master’s degrees, in Education and Anthropology, from Stanford University, and his Ph.D. in Medical and Educational Anthropology from Stanford University. Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Fetterman has received numerous awards and accolades and has been recognized worldwide for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession.  For 2019 he is being considered to be featured in TIP (Top Industry Professional Magazine), and is also being considered for IAOTP’s Lifetime Achievement Award.  He received both the Paul Lazarsfeld Award for Outstanding Contributions to Evaluation Theory and the Myrdal Award for Cumulative Contributions to Evaluation Practice – The American Evaluation Association’s highest honors. Dr. Fetterman has also been recognized by Marquis’ Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who Lifetime Achievement. Dr. Fetterman is the past president of the American Evaluation Association and the American Anthropological Association’s Council on Anthropology and Education.
 

Aside from his successful career, Dr. Fetterman has conducted evaluation projects throughout the world including: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Finland, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Nepal, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States. He is a published author and editor of 17 books including Empowerment Evaluation:  Knowledge and Tools for Self-assessment, Evaluation Capacity Building, and Accountability;  Principles in Practice, Ethnography: Step by Step (3rd edition); and Excellence and Equality: A Qualitatively Different Perspective on Gifted and Talented Education.  He has contributed to a variety of encyclopedias, including the International Encyclopedia of Education, the Encyclopedia of Human Intelligence, the Encyclopedia of Evaluation, and the Encyclopedia of Social Science Research Methods.   

Looking back, Dr. Fetterman attributes his success to his education, mentors he has had along the way and staying passionate in all his endeavors.  He says he has been blessed and feels this is just the beginning.   In his spare time he enjoys traveling, including trekking to Mt. Everest Base Camp, and spending time with his family. For the future, he hopes to continue to make a difference in people’s lives anyway that he can.
