On June 2nd, Auctions at Showplace is honored to present the first of two auctions featuring items from the estate of celebrated actor, Miriam Colón. Born in Puerto Rico, Colón moved to New York in 1953 to attend the prestigious Actor’s Studio. Highlights of her distinguished, award winning career include starring as the mother of Al Pacino’s Tony Montoya in the 1983 movie Scarface, playing the title role the 2013 film Bless Me, Ultima, and founding the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre Company in New York City. In 2014, she received the National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama for her lifetime achievements and helping to cultivate opportunities for fellow Hispanic actors.
The sale will feature strong works of Asian art including a monumental Japanese Meiji Satsuma polychrome earthenware urn with figural scenes, a Chinese Qing Dynasty carved ironwood jewelry box, and a small collection of Chinese relief carved gilt wood panels with figural scenes. From the African continent comes an important group of tribal carved wood figures and masks including pieces from the Bambara, Senufo, and Bobo traditions. Highlights in Pre-Columbian artifacts are represented by figural pottery from the Jalisco, Veracruz and Chimu cutures.
Among prints by several hotly sought after artists are “Elles,” the lithographic frontispiece to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s 1896 portfolio of images depicting women and two Pablo Picasso lithographs, “La Danse des Faunes” and “Le Vieux Roi.” Two handsome 19th century copies of Old Master paintings include “Roman Charity,” after Guido Reni, and a “Cupid” scene after Bartolomeo Schedoni. Other artwork sure to see vigorous bidding includes an Auguste Rodin female nude watercolor, a collection of oil paintings by Neill Mallow, and Ben Kamihira’s “Still Life with Knife.”
A robust offering of mid-century modern design includes a large onyx coffee table, a vintage “Brick” black lacquered folding screen after Eileen Gray, a Carole Stupell quartz crystal cluster table lamp, eight Mies van der Rohe “Brno” chairs, an Eliel Saarinen ash dining table with six dining chairs, a Verner Panton capiz shell chandelier and two Maurice Villency teak dressers.
Luxury timepieces are strongly represented by a Tiffany & Co. 18K yellow gold Patek Philippe wristwatch, an 18K yellow gold Patek Philippe & Co. pocket watch, an 18K yellow gold hunter case five-minute repeater pocket watch, a Corum 18K yellow gold and thirty-six diamonds ladies’ wrist watch bracelet, a Fougeray Art Deco 14K white gold, diamonds and onyx ladies’ wristwatch bracelet, and two 18K yellow gold Vacheron & Contsantin wristwatches.
Those looking for jewelry will find a wide selection of elegant gold, diamonds, pearls, and other precious stones including a La Nouvelle Bague 18K gold and enamel bangle bracelet, a Soret 14K yellow gold and pearl brooch, and a 14K gold Brutalist ring.
Fine silver to be offered includes a Royal Irish Silver Ltd. five piece sterling tea service with Celtic design, a Wilkens & Sohne Continental silver “Louis XIV” pattern flatware service for 12, and a Peruvian ‘900’ silver tray.
