Al-Anon Family Groups Celebrate Recovery in Albuquerque, New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – 07-01-2019 (PRDistribution.com) — Al-Anon and Alateen members from New Mexico and El Paso will meet at the 13th Annual Mountains of Hope Convention at the Nativo Lodge in Albuquerque, NM from August 9 – 11.

Al-Anon Family Groups, established in 1951, offers help and hope to anyone who has been affected by a loved one’s drinking. In the US, alcohol is a cause of family trouble for over one-third of Americans, according to Gallup’s Consumption Habits poll; thirty-six percent report alcohol-related incidents have interfered with their family life. According to the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA), approximately one in four children under 18 in the US are affected by a parent’s addiction to alcohol and other substances.  Al-Anon Family Groups, which includes Alateen for younger family members, understands the importance of family recovery from the effects of alcoholism.

The theme of this year’s convention, “A New Awakening to Gratitude”, reflects on the ability to find gratitude in all things and promises a thought-provoking program with speakers, meetings, and meditation.  Fun and fellowship is also on the schedule, including Saturday evening entertainment with a local mariachi band followed by the “Al-Anon’s Got Talent” show.

Professionals and the general public are invited to attend the Public Information and Professional Outreach meeting Friday night from 6 – 7pm to help clients suffering from someone else’s alcoholism. Family members, regardless of their age, usually blame themselves for the turmoil in their lives, often making excuses for problems, while unaware of how someone else’s problem drinking affects them. The fact is alcoholism affects family members from generation to generation unless the pattern is interrupted.  If you know or suspect that a problem drinker is affecting your client, we urge you to recommend attendance at this public meeting at no charge to you or them.

This area convention is an occasion for Al-Anon and Alateen (AA participation welcome) to gather for fun and fellowship, celebrate their beginnings and progress, enhance their understanding of the program, and deepen their gratitude because “even the darkest of moments can be faced with a grateful heart, if not for the crisis itself, at least for the growth it can evoke with the help of our Higher Power,” from In All Our Affairs (B-15), p. 209.
