Expect Miracles Foundation, The Samfund Announce Merger

BOSTON, MA – 07-02-2019 (PRDistribution.com) — Two leading cancer charities join forces to increase impact

Expect Miracles Foundation and The Samfund are excited to announce that as of July 1, 2019, they have partnered as one organization to maximize their impact in the cancer community.

“The decision to have The Samfund become a program of Expect Miracles Foundation is based on our combined, sincere desire to help people impacted by cancer,” said Frank Strauss, Founder and Chairman of Expect Miracles Foundation. “Cancer presents a medical, financial, and emotional challenge of incredible magnitude.  Joining forces with The Samfund allows all our supporters the opportunity to have a more comprehensive impact.”

Steven Bandrowczak, Chairman of The Samfund Board of Trustees, added, “One of our goals at The Samfund has always been long-term sustainability.  By partnering with Expect Miracles Foundation, we will be able to provide more support to more young adults and their families. I look forward to continuing to grow The Samfund’s programs in my new role as Co-Vice Chairman of the Expect Miracles Foundation Board of Directors.”

Founded in 1995, Expect Miracles Foundation rallies supporters from the financial services industry and beyond to invest in life-saving cancer research while advancing the financial and emotional health of people impacted by cancer.  Expect Miracles Foundation has granted over $10 million to cancer research organizations and patient care charities, and supports two collaborative research centers which share the goal of providing hope for patients by accelerating the pace of translating scientific discoveries into new therapies: The Robert and Renée Belfer Center for Applied Cancer Science at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA, and the Center for Experimental Therapeutics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, NY.

The Samfund, founded by Samantha Watson, is the first and largest nonprofit organization in the country dedicated to helping young adults who are struggling financially because of cancer.  Since 2003, The Samfund has awarded over $2 million in grants to over 1,000 young adults. Watson joins the management team at Expect Miracles Foundation as Managing Director of Stewardship.  In addition to Bandrowczak, The Samfund Trustees Lex Friedman, Sharon Karsten, and Corey Peterson have joined the Board of Directors of Expect Miracles Foundation.

“Our goal is to have the greatest impact on patients,” said Frank Heavey, the Executive Director of Expect Miracles Foundation.  “We recognized that providing care to those impacted by cancer is a critical part of providing a cure. When we began to consider launching a program to provide direct financial assistance to cancer patients and survivors, my first call was to Sam to ask for her advice.  We had built a great relationship with Sam after awarding three grants to The Samfund.”

“The more we talked, the more excited we became at the incredible opportunity for our organizations to join together,” said Watson.  “After 16 years of providing direct support to young adults, we have a clear understanding of the causes of financial toxicity. Becoming part of Expect Miracles Foundation, combining resources, and leveraging our respective strengths and relationships will give us the opportunity to finally get ahead of the problem. Our hope is that, by providing support earlier and using our history and insight to develop solutions, we will be able to prevent some of these financial crises from happening in the first place.”

By combining forces, Expect Miracles Foundation and The Samfund will be better positioned to connect those who have resources with those in need in order to save more lives and improve outcomes for those touched by cancer.
