Previews at Showplace Antiques + Design Center:October 7th through October 20th On October 20th, Auctions at Showplace will present choice selections of fine art, furniture, silver, jewelry, and decorative arts all fresh to the market from New York City estates. Headlining the sale is an Alphonse Debain (French, active 1883-1911) large three-part silver and white marble centerpiece. The one-of-a-kind work features a central rotunda with elaborate pierced domed cover along with six fluted Corinthian columns surrounding an altar; it is further flanked by two separate mirror plateaux with galleries. Superlative Continental furniture will hit the auction block including an ornate late 19th century French Rococo Revival giltwood settee with carved Orientalist fantasy figures, a Napoleon III style gueridon with elaborate gilt bronze mounts and inset with porcelain plaques depicting putti, fashionable ladies, and courting lovers, a Louis XV style giltwood upholstered parlor set including a pair of arm chairs, bench and folding tapestry screen, and an important pair of mahogany and gilt-bronze mounted armchairs from the Chateau de Fontainebleau, Paris, circa 1800 and stamped “Jacob Freres, Rue Meslee.” Artwork by hotly sought after artists includes a scene of “Sacre Coeur de Montmartre” by French artist Maurice Utrillo, a Raoul Dufy landscape charcoal drawing, a Mary Louise Ogier still life, and “Pecheurs,” an impressionistic river scene by Jacques Bouyssou. Also of note is a strong selection of works on paper including an Adriaen van Ostade etching, and Italian School religious drawings: a Francesco Solimena 18th century pencil drawing depicting Madonna and the Christ Child, a pencil study of St. John the Baptist from the circle of Salvator Rosa, and a 17th/18th century red chalk drawing of Christ and Pontius Pilate.Robust offerings of fine silver include an unusual Spanish Colonial armadillo form incense burner, water pitchers by Gorham and Tiffany & Co., a Reed & Barton “Chippendale” salver tray, a Belle Epoch four piece tea service, and a small grouping of Judaica silver table articles.
