Dr. David Fetterman selected as Top Anthropologist of the Decade by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP)

He was recently selected as Top Anthropologist of the Decade for 2020 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP).

Inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only 1 Anthropologist throughout the United States is selected for this distinction. Dr. Fetterman is being recognized for this honor for dedicating over 40 years to the field of Anthropology. He was recently honored at IAOTP’s Annual Awards Gala at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas as Top Anthropologist of the Year. IAOTP is incredibly honored to recognize Dr. Fetterman for his success and dedication to his field. He will be honored at IAOTP’s Annual Awards Gala being held at the Plaza Hotel in New York City at the end of this year for this distinction. 

Dr. Fetterman is a highly skilled, socially conscious, and extraordinarily accomplished Anthropologist and Educator. His work has contributed to bridging the digital divide in communities of color, reducing community tobacco consumption rates, including vaping, improving homelessness and substance abuse programs, enhancing computer literacy, and school accreditation. 

He also served as Director of Evaluation for the School of Medicine, Director of the Master’s Program in Policy Analysis and Evaluation in the School of Education, and Consulting Professor of Education in the School of Education at Stanford University

Dr. Fetterman is also the past president of the American Evaluation Association and the American Anthropological Association’s Council on Anthropology and Education.  He is the Author and Editor of 17 books including a popular qualitative methods book, Ethnography: Step by Step (4th edition). 

He is the founder ofEmpowerment Evaluation (a self-assessment approach used in 16 countries)This approach is influenced by his anthropological training and has revolutionized the field of evaluation.  It is designed to help people help themselves, by building the ability to assess their own performance.  It is described in detail in Empowerment Evaluation:  Knowledge and Tools for SelfAssessment, Evaluation Capacity Building and Accountability

Throughout his academic career, his roles have included Professor & Research Director for the California Institute of Integral Studies, Senior Researcher at RMC Research and Principal Research Scientist at the American Institute for Research. Dr. Fetterman was a faculty member in the School of Business and Leadership at the University of Charleston and served as a Visiting Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at San Jose State University. 

His key areas of expertise are in elementary, secondary, and higher education; medical education; environmental health and safety; programs for dropouts and gifted children; ethnography; empowerment evaluation; and organizational learning and development. 

Dr. Fetterman received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Anthropology and Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from the University of Connecticut where he graduated summa cum laude, his two Master’s degrees, in Education and Anthropology, from Stanford University, and his Ph.D. in Medical and Educational Anthropology from Stanford University.

In his role at Fetterman & Associates Dr. Fetterman, conducts domestic and international evaluations. He is involved with projects that range from a $15 million Hewlett-Packard Digital Village project to small townships in South Africa.  He has also provided evaluation consultation services for Google, the WK Kellogg Foundation, U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, tobacco prevention and academic distress projects in the state of Arkansas, Knight Foundation programs for journalists, and entrepreneurship programs for at-risk students in the United States. 

Throughout his remarkable career, Dr. Fetterman has received numerous awards and accolades and has been recognized worldwide for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession.  For 2020 he will be considered for an exclusive interview on TIP Radio and to be broadcast on the famous Reuters building in Times Square, NYC. In 2019 he was featured in TIP (Top Industry Professional) Magazine. He received both the Paul Lazarsfeld Award for Outstanding Contributions to Evaluation Theory and the Myrdal Award for Cumulative Contributions to Evaluation Practice – The American Evaluation Association’s highest honors as well as the American Anthropological Association’s 2019 Presidential Award for excellence and innovation in applying anthropological insights to the evaluation and improvement of education, social, and health services. Dr. Fetterman has also been recognized by Marquis’ Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who Lifetime Achievement. 

Aside from his successful career, Dr. Fetterman has conducted evaluation projects throughout the world including: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Finland, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Nepal, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States.  A few additional books by Dr. Fetterman of particular note include: Empowerment Evaluation Principles in Practice and Excellence and Equality: A Qualitatively Different Perspective on Gifted and Talented Education.  He has contributed to a variety of encyclopedias, including the International Encyclopedia of Education, the Encyclopedia of Human Intelligence, the Encyclopedia of Evaluation, and the Encyclopedia of Social Science Research Methods

Looking back, Dr. Fetterman attributes his success to his education, parents, and mentors he has had the honor of working alongside and staying passionate in all his endeavors. In his spare time he enjoys traveling and exploring, including trekking to Mt. Everest Base Camp with his family. For the future, he hopes to continue to make a difference in people’s lives anyway that he can.
