On December 31, 2019, Chinese authorities notified the World Health Organization that several cases of pneumonia from an unknown virus had occurred in Wuhan (first cases in early December) and that several of the infected had been employed at the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market (a wet market), which was closed down on January 1 although the animal implicated is not yet certain. By January 7, a new coronavirus, then dubbed the 2019 novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) or Wuhan Coronavirus was identified.
