Cajon Valley Union School District is taking the safety and wellbeing of communities served by the district into their own hands at full force. On March 14, 2020 Superintendent David Miyashiro posted a plea on YouTube, calling CVUSD employees to take action to ensure children in their communities are cared for by volunteering with CVUSD Child Nutrition Services. Many students in the Cajon Valley region rely on Child Nutrition Services for breakfast and lunch, and school closures in the wake of COVID-19 have left these children without their usual reliable meals.

This call to action was put out in response to Governor Newsom’s executive order to shelter in place due to the COVID-19 outbreak, leaving only essential businesses open. Assistant Superintendent Michelle Hayes expressed in the YouTube video with Miyashiro the need for volunteers to assemble, hand out, and pick up and deliver meals districtwide. The district had already received many emails from concerned employees wondering how they could help in this time of uncertainty, but after Miyashiro’s video an overwhelming number of emails poured in from employees to volunteer.

All children in the Cajon Valley community under the age of 18 have access to these grab and go lunches without any sort of verification. Title 1 school sites in Cajon Valley are set up to provide meals to students who need it, and anyone under 18 who shows up to one of the CVUSD sites providing meals will receive a meal. Child Nutrition workers and volunteers are leading by example, following regulations given by the CDC to practice social distancing and stay at least 6 feet apart and taking extra sanitary precautions while preparing and delivering meals. Hayes states in a recap video of CVUSD’s efforts that the district and those involved in this endeavor are “doing everything [they] can to stop and prevent the spread of COVID-19.”

Assembling thousands of daily meals that contain a lunch and breakfast in each is just one example of how Cajon Valley Union School District and the stellar employees working for the district are doing their part to unify and care for their community.  Jen Moore, a Child Nutrition Supervisor for CVUSD, said it best. “The really awesome thing about Cajon Valley is that people celebrate each other like family. This is not unexpected for Cajon Valley to do, to really step up and try and make sure that we continue to support each other and our families.”

Everyone involved at Cajon Valley Union School District is committed to making the community the best place to live, work, play and raise a family. Assistant Superintendent Hayes sends a hopeful message to her community: “We’re not only going to get through this, we’re going to rock it!”
