Dr. Barry Boehm selected as Top Professor of the Decade by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP)

UNITED STATES, CALIFORNIA – 03-31-2020 (PRDistribution.com) — Dr. Barry W. Boehm is the University of Southern California Distinguished Professor of Computer Science, Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Astronautics; the TRW Professor of Software Engineering; and Founding Director of the USC Center for Systems and Software Engineering.  He is also the Chief Scientist of the DoD-Stevens-USC Systems Engineering Research Center, and a part-time employee of the Aerospace Corp. Dr. Boehm was recently chosen to be honored as the Top Professor of the Decade for 2020 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for his prosperity, longevity and dedication as an Educator. 

While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only 1 Male and 1 Female professional in the education industry are selected for this distinction. This member has demonstrated excellence in his field for over 50 years. He was honored at IAOTP’s Annual Awards Gala at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas for his selection as Top Professor of the Year for 2019. IAOTP is incredibly honored to display Dr. Boehm’s success. In December of this year, he will accept his nomination on stage at the Plaza Hotel in New York City as Professor of the Decade.

Dr. Boehm began his studies and received his B.A. Degree from Harvard in 1957, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from UCLA in 1961 and 1964, all is Mathematics.  He has also received an honorary Sc.D. in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts in 2000 and in Software Engineering from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2011.  

As an experienced Educator and Professional in Software and Computer Technology, Dr. Boehm has certainly proven himself as an expert in the field for having over 50 years of service to educating others. He has demonstrated success as a Professor of Computer Science, Industrial and Systems Engineering and Astronautics and in every position he has ever held. Previous positions and roles of Dr. Boehm include: Serving the US Department of Defense as Director of the DARPA Information Science and Technology Office, where he managed over $1 Billion of R&D efforts, and subsequently as Director of the DDR&E Software and Computer Technology Office.  He worked at TRW, culminating as Chief Scientist of the Defense Systems Group. Previously, he worked at the Rand Corporation, culminating as Head of the Information Sciences Department, and was previously a Programmer-Analyst at General Dynamics.  

While at USC, Dr. Boehm has served as the Principal Investigator on major research contracts and grants from the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and has received industry research grants from over 25 industrial organizations.  His real-client software engineering project course has successfully completed over 200 projects for USC-neighborhood clients and educated over 2000 students in an integrated approach to systems engineering and software engineering. He is widely regarded for his contributions to the field including the Constructive Cost Model (COCOMO) family of parametric estimation models, the Spiral Model of the Software Process, the Theory W approach to systems and software management and requirements determination, and foundations for the areas of software risk management and software quality factor analysis.

Throughout his notable career, Dr. Boehm has received numerous awards and accolades and has been recognized worldwide for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession.  In 2000, Dr. Boehm received the IEEE Harlan D. Mills Award and in 1997 received the ACM Distinguished Research Award in Software Engineering. Among his other list of accomplishments include the J.D. Warnier Prize for Excellence in Information Sciences, the ISPA Freiman Award for Parametric Analysis, the NSIA Grace Murray Hopper Award, the Office of the Secretary of Defense Award for Excellence and the ASQC Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Boehm is also a Fellow of the primary professional societies in computing (ACM), aerospace (AIAA), electronics (IEEE), and systems engineering (INCOSE), and is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering.  In 2010, he received the IEEE Simon Ramo Medal in Systems Science and Engineering. In 2011, he was the recipient of the Wayne Stevens Lifetime Achievement Award in Software Engineering. In 2013, he received the AIAA Software Systems Medal. For 2019-2020, he received the Albert Nelson Marquis Who’s Who Lifetime Achievement award. Also for 2019, he was featured in TIP (Top Industry Professional Magazine) and was honored at IAOTP’s Annual Awards Gala. For 2020, he is being considered for the Lifetime Achievement Award and for an Interview on T.I.P. Radio (Top Industry Professional Radio Podcast). 

Dr. Boehm is also a sought-after lecturer, speaker, and has published over 500 papers and books with over 58,000 citations and a Google Scholar h-index of 80.  He has served on the boards of several scientific journals and was invited as a Guest Lecturer of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He is founding Chair of the AIAA Technical Committee on Computer Systems, and has served as Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Software Engineering, and as a member of the Governing Board of the IEEE Computer Society.  He has also served as Chair of the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board’s Information Technology Panel, Chair of the NASA Research and Technology Advisory Committee for Guidance, Control, and Information Processing, and Chair of the Board of Visitors for the CMU Software Engineering Institute.

In the future, Dr. Boehm hopes to continue inspiring others to pursue a career in computer and software engineering. He stays passionate while continuing his journalism and lending his resources to colleagues and the education industry. Dr. Boehm’s professional growth and well-respected nature have afforded him to consistently display greatness and enrich the lives of many.
