CYNTHIA R. MABRY-KING SELECTED FOR THE PRESTIGIOUS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FOR 2020 BY THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF TOP PROFESSIONALS (IAOTP)

Mabry-King, Mediator, full-time Circuit Mediator for the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the first African American to hold that position, has recently been selected for the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for 2020 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for her influence, proficiency and dedication to her professional life. Mabry-King is a graduate of New York University’s Master of Laws program and a graduate of Howard University’s Juris Doctor program where she was Student Articles Editor of the Howard Law Journal.

Mabry-King is being recognized for this honor for dedicating over 3 decades of her life’s work to the legal field. She is an inspiration to all professionals within the legal industry and has excelled in every position she has ever served. Her impressive prior roles have included: judicial clerkships, private practice, law teaching, and mediation.  

Early in her legal career, Mabry-King served as a law clerk for the Honorable Anna Diggs Taylor (U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan) and for the Honorable Harriett Rosen Taylor (Superior Court of the District of Columbia where she mediated landlord and tenant and small claims cases for that Court). She practiced law at Crowell & Moring LLP, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (where, as a trial attorney, she won all her trials except one and negotiated settlements in many cases through mediation), and the Federal Railroad Administration (where she personally negotiated settlements regarding railroad company violations of federal regulations). 

In academia, Mabry-King served as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for Howard University School of Law and Professor of Law. She taught Civil Procedure, Adoption Law, Family Law, Pretrial Litigation Practice, Complex Litigation and Appellate Advocacy. She was also the Director of the Howard University Family Law Certificate Program which she created with a faculty colleague and some law students. She also taught at Washington & Lee University School of Law and West Virginia College of Law where she was the first African-American woman to be awarded tenure at both law schools.  From 2012-2017, she was a certified Fulbright Specialist.

Mabry-King is widely known for facilitating settlement discussions in hundreds of complex disputes. She was a volunteer mediator for the Superior Court of the District of Columbia’s Multi-Door Dispute Resolution, Family Division for thirteen years before she joined the Fourth Circuit. She has nearly 200 hours of mediation training and has trained other mediators and law students. In 2005 and 2010, while she was a Professor of Law, she created and taught an international comparative law course on alternative dispute resolution processes at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa.

Throughout her career, Mabry-King has received many awards and accolades and she has been recognized worldwide for her outstanding leadership and commitment to those whom she serves. For 2020 she is being considered for a feature in TIP (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine. For 2019 she was selected as Top Mediator of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) and was honored at their Annual Awards Gala at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. In 2015 she was the recipient of the Angel in Adoption Award presented by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (sponsored by U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski), the Distinguished Service Award presented by the Law School Admission Council presented by the Board of Trustees, and the Outstanding Faculty of the Year Award presented by the 2015 graduates of Howard University School of Law.  For 2013, she made the Capital Pro Bono Honor Roll from the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. In 2010, she received the Warren Rosmarin Professor of Law Award of Excellence in Teaching and Service. She is a member of the Supreme Court of the United States Bar, the District of Columbia Bar Association, The Federal Bar Association’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Section, the American Bar Association’s Dispute Resolution Section, and the International Society of Family Law.

Mabry-King is a sought-after lecturer, speaker and writer. She frequently speaks at Continuing Legal Education seminars and lectures at law schools. She has spoken to audiences in many states in the United States and other countries including the Bahamas, China, Cuba, France, Italy, and the Netherlands. She has been interviewed on radio and television broadcasts. She presented testimony to Congress and to the District of Columbia City Council on diversity and adoption issues which led to significant changes in both areas. She has published more than twenty-five articles on various legal subjects including mediation. Her best-selling Adoption Law textbook has been cited favorably and widely by judges, legislators, lawyers and professors. 

Mabry-King has a strong sense of community service. Her record of service includes volunteering as a Guardian ad Litem for the DC Volunteer Lawyers Project, service by appointment of Governor Robert Ehrlich, Jr. on the Citizens Review Board for [Foster] Children; the Calvary Baptist Church Shelter (for Women); and organizing legal education programs and providing entertainment for seniors.  She has spent countless hours of service on the Board of Trustees for the Law School Admission Council and as Co-Vice Chair of the American Bar Association’s Diversity Committee advocating for diversity in the legal profession,  

Looking back, Mabry-King attributes her success to her perseverance, her upbringing which includes strong faith and work ethic, mentors she has had the honor of working alongside, and her passion for helping people. Aside from her successful career Mabry-King is also an active member in her community with a special interest in serving seniors and children. When not working, she enjoys line dancing and hand dancing with her husband, reading, traveling, playing the soprano saxophone that she won from Kenny G, and spending time with her family and close friends. For the future, she uses a Ralph Waldo Emerson quote to live by: “To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived, this is to have succeeded.”
