Next Level Ventures presents Susan Wood “The Joe Rosenfield Award” for outstanding leadership. Inspiration for The Joe Rosenfield AwardThe inspiration for the award comes from Joe Rosenfield and Grinnell College (grinnell.edu) as well as Jason Zweig (jasonzweig.com).Joe Rosenfield (1904-2000) was a highly successful businessman from Iowa who headed Younkers (a large department store company), owned a minority stake in the Chicago Cubs (a major league baseball team), and mentored Warren Buffett (a renowned investor). In addition, Mr. Rosenfield was member of the board of trustees of Grinnell College and helped to guide its endowment from about $78,000 to over $1 billion. Part of that success included an early stage investment in Intel. Mr. Rosenfield was also a wonderful person full of “charisma, wisdom, and wisecracks” as well as exceptional generosity. Recently, a book was written about Mr. Rosenfield by George Drake called “Mentor: Life and Legacy of Joe Rosenfield” and more info can be found at this link: alumni.grinnell.edu/news/mentor-book-launch. Grinnell College, based in Grinnell, Iowa, is a leader in liberal arts education. Grinnell has not only been a source of top students and faculty members, but also alumni including Mr. Rosenfield and Robert Noyce, the co-founder of Intel.Jason Zweig, an acclaimed writer for The Wall Street Journal, penned an article for Money magazine on Mr. Rosenfield in 2000. About Susan Wood, Ph.D. Dr. Wood has 20+ years of experience championing innovative clinical solutions to the marketplace, from concept to routine clinical use.Prior to VIDA, Dr. Wood served as Executive Vice President of Marketing and Technology for Vital Images (now Canon), a leader in advanced visualization software solutions; and VP of marketing at R2 Technology (now Hologic), where she championed the development, regulatory approval and commercial release of the first FDA approved (PMA) software product for the automatic detection of lung nodules in both diagnostic and screening chest CT examinations. She is a member of the board of directors for iCAD (NASDAQ:ICAD), a global medical technology leader providing innovative cancer detection and therapy solutions. Dr. Wood received her Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, School of Hygiene and Public Health. Her Ph.D. work combined quantifying three-dimensional lung structure with changes in lung function using high-resolution CT imaging. She also holds a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University, and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park.
