NY Showplace: May 3rd Online-Only Auction at Showplace

MANHATTAN, NY – 04-30-2020 (PRDistribution.com) — Auctions at Showplace will conduct an exciting online-only auction on Sunday, May 3rd featuring estate fresh merchandise from New York City and the Metropolitan area.

A highlight of the sale is a group of five works on paper by contemporary artist, Donald Baechler. For sale is a mixed media entitled “Candle” depicting whimsical imagery, and a gouache and tea on paper along with three ink on paper prints depicting plants and flowers in silhouette. By Mihail Chemiakin, a widely sought after artist, is a 1987 pastel on paper depicting a surrealistic image of a man with a pipe.Other strong fine art includes two 19th century landscapes by British artist John Westall,  two small antique oil paintings after Meisonnier, and a selection of modern works including a large oil on canvas of a figure signed: “Mendij.” Of many intriguing sculptures, a clay composition by R. Pollok features a bust of a man with large protruding fish. Another fish appears in Terry Owen Mathews’ “Marlin,” while other animal sculptures depict leopards and swans. A fine antique bronze copy of Auguste Moreau’s “Vici” depicts a winged cupid on plinth base.Every auction at Showplace features extraordinary fine jewelry, and this one is no exception. Hitting the auction block is a 14K yellow gold bamboo motif bangle, a pair of Marco Bicergo style 18K drop earrings, a pair of Boris LeBeau 18K yellow gold and platinum modernist earrings, a men’s gold and mother of pearl dress set, and many fine examples of hoop earrings, rings, and other accessories. Complementing the jewelry is a group of Hermes scarves, another trademark offering at Showplace with one sheer silk example selling for $1,400 dollars in the April 19th auction. Designer fashion for sale will include pieces by Gucci, Hermes, Christian Dior, Valentino, Loro Piana, Ermenegildo Zegna, Brioni, and more.The May 3rd sale will also feature a range of decorative arts, notably a grouping of art glass featuring Lalique, Daum, and Baccarat, along with Chinese cloisonné enamel vessels, Judaica menorahs and objects, Brutalist sculpture, clocks and desk accessories, Inuit carved soapstone figures, and an unusual Limoges enamel on copper floral still life by Jeanne Soubourou.Showplace Antiques is located at 40 West 25th St. between 5th and 6th Avenues.
