What is Peripheral Neuropathy? The peripheral nervous system sends information and sensations from your brain and spinal cord to the other parts of your body. When the nerves that are responsible for the transfer of these information and sensations are damaged, this condition is known as peripheral neuropathy. The nerves are no longer able to send information and sensations to the other parts of your body. Peripheral neuropathy often causes numbness, weakness, pain or loss of sensations in your hands, feet and other parts of your bodyWhat is Diabetic Neuropathy? Diabetic neuropathy is nerve damage that occurs due to diabetes. Diabetic neuropathyaffects patients with diabetes. High blood sugar levels can damage or affect the nerves in your body leading to pain, numbness or loss of sensations. Diabetic neuropathy often affects the nerves in your legs and feet. Dr. Graff Neuropathy center’s services include: Diagnosis We provide accurate diagnosis before providing the best treatments for our patients. We provide a variety of diagnostic techniques for both peripheral and diabetic neuropathy.

During diagnosis for peripheral neuropathy, your medical history will be reviewed. Then we will take you through some diagnostic procedures which include blood test, neurological examination, imaging tests, nerve function tests, nerve biopsy, and skin biopsy.

During diagnosis for diabetic neuropathy, we will perform physical examination, review your symptoms and medical history. We will check your muscle strength, tendon reflexes, and your sensitivity to touch. We will also take you through other diagnostic testings such as filament testing, sensory testing, nerve conduction testing, muscle response testing and autonomic testing.

We take you through all these diagnostic testing and procedures to ascertain the exact cause and nature of your condition so we can provide the best treatments for you. Treatment We provide a variety of treatments for both peripheral and diabetic neuropathy. Our treatments help to manage your conditions and relieve your symptoms. Depending on the nature of your condition, we treat peripheral neuropathy patients by:

Administering over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen and naproxen. These pain relievers help to relieve minor pains.

For severe pains, we provide prescription pain medications such as tramadol oxycodone. These drugs can help relieve severe pains. However, they are addictive. You will only need to take them according to prescriptions and for a short time.

We also provide anti-seizure medications such as gabapentin and pregabalin. These medications may also help relieve nerve pain.

We also provide topical treatments such as capsaicin cream and lidocaine patches to help improve your symptoms.

We also provide certain tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline, doxepin, and nortriptyline. These antidepressants can help relieve pain caused by peripheral neuropathy.

We may also take you through some therapies to help relieve your symptoms. These include Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), plasma exchange and intravenous immune globulin, and physical therapies.

We also provide surgical procedures for peripheral neuropathy if your condition is not responding to other conservative treatments. Also, if your neuropathy is caused by the pressure of a tumor pressed on the nerves, you may need to undergo surgery to remove the tumor and relieve the pressure.  Education We educate our patients on how to stay healthy and take care of their legs and feet. We particularly educate patients with diabetes on how to manage their conditions to prevent peripheral and diabetic neuropathy.
