Secretary Pompeo, President Tsai, Joshua Wong to #DefendDemocracy at Copenhagen Democracy Summit

Denmark, Kobenhavn, Kastrup – 06-10-2020 (PRDistribution.com) — The third Copenhagen Democracy Summit will convene virtually on June 18/19th with contributions from political, business and media leaders around the world.

The summit, an initiative of the Alliance of Democracies Foundation, comes as democracy has been challenged and the global world order reshaped by Covid-19. The summit will discuss the challenges of the authoritarian resurgence by China and Russia, pressures on freedom and democracy in Hong Kong and Taiwan, the US’s global leadership role, and stronger cooperation among democracies such as the D-10 group on technology, and the role of tech in aiding both democratic forces and autocrats.

Over the course of two days, participants will hear from leaders across government, politics, civil society, business and tech, including:

• US Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo

• President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Dr. Tsai Ing-wen

• European Commission Vice-President Vera Jourova

• NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana

• 68th US Secretary of State (2013-2017) John Kerry

• 64th US Secretary of State (1997-2001) Madeleine Albright

• 29th Australian Prime Minister (2015-2018) Malcolm Turnbull

• Hong Kong democracy activist Joshua Wong

• Chairman of Novo Nordisk Lars Rebien Sørensen

• Microsoft President Brad Smith

Convened by the 12th NATO Secretary General (2009-2014) and 24th Danish Prime Minister (2001-2009) Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the summit will be moderated by Politico’s Ryan Heath and former ABC and CNN correspondent Jeanne Meserve.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen said:

“In my lifetime I have not seen such an existential threat to global democracy. Assumptions we held for seventy years about the prevalence of democracy and a global rules-based order can no longer be taken for granted. This is why the world’s democracies must now unite, to re-assert values that brought relative freedom, peace and prosperity at home and abroad.”

The Alliance of Democracies will also publish the third annual Democracy Perception Index, a major study into perceptions towards democracy in over 50 countries. Conducted by Dalia Research, this year’s DPI will also include perceptions of how governments have handled the Covid pandemic.
