Dr. Whalen is a dynamic, results-driven leader who has demonstrated success in every role he has served. Currently, Dr. Whalen is the Director of the Genitourinary Oncology Multi-Disciplinary Clinic at his institution and also the Site Director of the National Cancer Institute Urologic Oncology Fellowship. He also provides education and research mentorship for medical students and residents in his role as Assistant Professor of Urology/Urologic Oncology.. Under his tutelage his students have presented their research at numerous regional and national conferences.Dr. Whalen’s impressive repertoire of past roles include serving as a clinical fellow of Urologic Oncology at Yale-New Haven Hospital and as a Clinical Fellow at Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr. Whalen has provided his skills and expertise as the GW Cancer Outreach Committee Physician Liaison as well as the Cancer Liaison Physician for the GW Cancer Committee. His specialty focus involves treatment of urological cancers, with expertise in both major open and minimally invasive surgery.. His clinical interests include prostate cancer (including prostate MRI, MRI-ultrasound fusion biopsy and cryotherapy), bladder cancer (including blue-light cystoscopy and continent/incontinent urinary diversion), kidney cancer, testis cancer, adrenal cancer, ureteral cancer, robotic surgery with the Davinci system (including prostatectomy, cystectomy, partial nephrectomy and adrenalectomy) and laparoscopic surgery. Before embarking on his professional career path, Dr. Whalen earned a Bachelor of Arts in Neurobiology from Harvard University, magna cum laude, in 2004. He continued his studies at the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons to receive his MD in 2008. Then completed his Surgical internship and Urology residency at Columbia Presbyterian in New York. Dr. Whalen received the Outstanding Clinical Instruction “Teacher of the Year” Award, from the George Washington University’s Department of Urology in 2019; ranked as a Top Urologic Oncologist in Washington, DC in the 2018-2019 year; was included as an Honored Member of Continental Who’s Who in 2018; received the GW MFA Role Model of the Week in 2018; was the National Chief Resident Debate Winnerat the American Urological Association National Conference in 2014; and was selected for presentation of research at the AUA New York Section Valentine Essay Contest in 2012 and 2013.Aside from his successful career, Dr. Whalen is a sought-after speaker who has presented at a number of conferences in the US and internationally, including the AUA National Conference, the AUA New York Section Ferdinand C. Valentine Medal & Resident Essay Meeting, the 2016 World Cancer Congress in Shanghai, China, and the 2014 AUA National Chief’s Debate, which he won as a representative of the New York Section. Dr. Whalen is very passionate and actively involved in clinical outcomes and research focusing on cancer of the prostate, bladder and kidneys. His research interests include robotic surgery techniques, optimization of pathologic reporting of urological cancers and multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mp-MRI) and its role in prostate cancer management-active surveillance, post-treatment biochemical recurrence, focal ablation and comparison to/ integration with commercially-available serum-based and tissue-based genomic assays. In addition to Dr. Whalen’s research interests, he also serves as a reviewer for Current Urology, the Journal of Urology, and sits on the Editorial Board of the ARC Journal of Urology (AJU). Dr. Whalen has also served as a statistical consultant for the Journal of Urology. Furthermore, he has published over two dozen original research articles in peer-reviewed journals, including Urologic Oncology, Urology Practice, Prostate, Journal of Laparoendoscopic & Advanced Surgical Techniques and BJU International.Looking back, Dr. Whalen attributes his success to his perseverance, mentors he has had the honor of working alongside, his education, and staying passionate in all his endeavors.
