At arm’s length: A firsthand account of an Alzheimer’s caregiver during the COVID lockdown

United States, New York, Syracuse – 07-28-2020 (PRDistribution.com) — The past several months of statewide COVID lockdowns have been hard on all of us and, for one Liverpool local, they have been even harder. Danielle Carson made the decision to move her father, Ronald, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, into Memory Care during August of last year. Like all of us, she had no clue that the decision could mean months of government-mandated separation.

“The most difficult part of this crisis has been the emotional guilt over not being able to maximize the time that our Dad has left in each stage of his illness progression,” said Carson. “I quit my job last October to be able to spend more time with him while he still knew us.”Despite the emotional toll of not being able to hug her father for weeks on end, she still thinks she made the right decision, largely due to her father’s care team. “We knew exactly what our Dad’s wishes were when it came to caring for him with Alzheimer’ because he helped his mother to move into a similar Memory Care facility 18 years ago, and we had frequent conversations about his preferences for care when it came time that he couldn’t live alone, so in that case, we were very lucky. Add to this our good fortune that we have such a terrific facility directly across the street.”The team members at Ronald’s Memory Care community, Keepsake Village at Greenpoint, are some of many senior living professionals throughout New York attempting to find creative ways to keep families in touch while abiding by state law. “The team at Keepsake has been absolutely wonderful through this entire crisis. “We get notes in the mail and cards with a recent photograph of Dad, which is absolutely wonderful,” said Carson. “I am in awe every day at the heroics that the entire team displays in handling the Coronavirus. No one went into this field expecting that something like this crisis would ever happen. Every single person working in their essential positions exhibits such bravery and love every day that they come into work. I’m not there to see it but I know it’s happening because I know them. The wonderful people at Keepsake truly care about their residents.”Keepsake Village at Greenpoint is a Hearth Senior Living community. Other local Hearth include The Hearth at Greenpoint in Liverpool, and The Hearth on James in Syracuse. For more information on Hearth Management and its dedication to its residents and their families, visit www.thehearth.netAbout The HearthHearth Management is a privately owned and operated management and development company based in Syracuse, NY.
