He also notes that, in his own plastic surgery practice, he closely adheres to guidelines designed to minimise risks associated with breast implants. Dr Layt also emphasizes the importance of regular self-breast examinations and routine professional screenings, as well. According to Dr Layt, one of the most common questions he receives about breast augmentation involves general candidacy requirements for the procedure. He says a number of patients who are considering the placement of breast implants wonder whether they have “aged out” of contention for breast augmentation. Fortunately, Dr Layt says, age is simply not a very important factor for most patients when it comes to determining their candidacy. He explains that the top criteria he is most concerned with are the patient’s current state of overall health, their medical history, and whether those components increase the risks involved with a surgical procedure. He says that women who are medically cleared for surgery and who have realistic expectations for the results of breast augmentation are often very good candidates for the procedure, noting that he has helped many women in upper age ranges achieve beautiful aesthetic outcomes. During the initial consultation with each patient, Dr Layt talks with them about their concerns and goals, performs an examination, and explains the procedure in detail. When the patient ultimately chooses to undergo the breast augmentation procedure, they are presented with a range of breast implant sizes, shapes, and types to choose from. He says breast augmentation is typically performed as a day surgery under general anaesthesia, allowing patients to avoid an overnight hospital stay.
