Surena-Mattson, SLP, COM, a Patient Preferred Practitioner representing Speech Language Pathology and Orofacial Myology in the state of Connecticut for 2020.

With over two decades of accomplishments in her field, Dana is highly respected and sought-after for her expertise in oral-motor exercises, accent reduction, and treating professionals with laryngeal pathology. Her private practice in New Canaan, CT also provides treatment of communication disorders (speech disorders and language disorders), cognitive-communication disorders, voice disorders, and swallowing disorders. She is also a classically trained Opera singer, who treats manual voice therapy for professional voice users with laryngeal pathology.

As an orofacial myologist, Dana is trained in the treatments of neuromuscular re-education and repatterning of the oral and facial muscles. Dana provides formal and informal orofacial myofunctional evaluation and treatment, and manual voice assessments/intervention for patients ranging from newborns to adults who are diagnosed with a variety of myofunctional, and motor disorders including but not limited to: chromosomal disorders, epilepsy, tethered oral tissue [TOTs], Down Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis, Bell’s Palsy Feeding Disorders, Dysarthria, Dyspraxia, Dysphagia, Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders, facial nerve damage, polyps, nodules, muscle tension dysphonia, muscle based voice disturbances- craniofacial anomalies (e.g. cleft palate-lip and etc), and a plethora of other motor speech impairments and syndromes that have neuromuscular involvement.

Dana is a sought-after specialist who receives five-star ratings and reviews from her patients who praise her expertise and compassion

“She is so vested in “her kids” & truly passionate about her work,” read a patient review. “She treated my sons when they were in preschool & resolved their speech issues.”

Dana’s journey into healthcare began with a Bachelor’s Degree in Drama and Anthropology in 1992 from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She is multi-lingual and can speak French, Haitian Creole, and English. She went on to obtain her Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from New York University, 1997; and has received certifications as a trained Orofacial Myologist, Bridge Level PROMPT, and Hanen clinician.

As a PROMPT clinician, her technique is a tactile-kinesthetic approach that uses touch cues to a patient’s articulators (jaw, tongue, lips) to manually guide them through a targeted word, phrase or sentence. The technique develops motor control and the development of proper oral muscular movements, while eliminating unnecessary muscle movements, such as jaw sliding and inadequate lip rounding.

Dana considers making a difference in the lives of others to be the most gratifying aspect of her career and works in conjunction with physicians, ENT’s, Orthodontists, cranio-osteopaths, oral surgeons, dentists, speech, physical and occupational therapists, gastroenterologists, nutritionists, physicians, psychologists, respiratory specialists, social workers, special educators, and ABA Teams to bring about the best plan of treatment for her patients. She has also been an integral part of the ABA Teams to help develop formal and informal programs for the children who were on the Autistic Spectrum.
