Dr. Alan Hartford has been named the International Healthcare Hero in Radiation Oncology

Dr. Alan C. Hartford, Professor of Medicine at Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine and Program Director of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center’s Radiation Oncology Residency Program, was recently named the recipient of the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) International Healthcare Hero in Radiation Oncology Award for 2022 for his determination, integrity, and commitment to medicine, radiology, and oncology. 

 

This honor has been bestowed due to his dedication and leadership within the healthcare industry. IAOTP’s International Healthcare Heroes are selected for their longevity in their disciplines, services to society, effect on their industries, and their characters – traits that make Dr. Hartford deserving of this distinction. Only one member is selected from the radiation oncology field. Dr. Hartford is honored for his nearly three decades of professional expertise as a Professor of Medicine and Radiation Oncologist, successful in every medical post he has held. Dr. Hartford received a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Master of Arts in Philosophy from Stanford University, followed by his Doctor of Medicine degree from Harvard Medical School in 1992.  He worked as an intern at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital and then finished his residency and fellowship in radiation oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital while also completing his Ph.D. in political economy and government at Harvard. Dr. Hartford’s strong resume includes service on the American Medical Association’s Council on Ethical & Judicial Affairs, Council on Long-Range Planning and Development, Council on Medical Service, and the AMA’s Board of Trustees. He has also held positions at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, the American College of Radiology, the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, and the NRG-Oncology Clinical Trials Group.

 

Dr. Hartford’s clinical interests include but are not limited to central nervous system tumors, genitourinary cancers, bone, and soft tissue sarcomas, head and neck cancers, as well as technologies such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy, prostate brachytherapy, and stereotactic radiosurgery. Throughout his exceptional career, Dr. Hartford has earned several honors and distinctions. He has been acknowledged in numerous journals and periodicals worldwide for his outstanding leadership and devotion to the field. In 2020, he was featured on the front cover of TIP (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine and on the renowned Times Square Billboard in New York. He was inducted into the IAOTP Hall of Fame in 2021. Dr. Hartford has previously been named one of America’s Top Doctors by Castle Connolly Medical, a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, and a recipient of several research fellowships from organizations such as the American Society of Radiation Oncology, the American Cancer Society, the American Association of Cancer Research, and the MacArthur Foundation.

 

In addition to his outstanding clinical practice, Dr. Hartford has contributed to several studies and scholarly evaluations that have been published in major medical journals. He is heavily involved in medical education, having founded Dartmouth’s radiation oncology residency program and teaching numerous lectures, seminars and courses for students, medical residents, and faculty. He has created works of art, including his debut novel, “The First Days of August,” which he wrote under the pen name Alan Froning. He has served on the American Society of Radiation Oncology boards, the American College of Radiology, the American Medical Association, the Radiological Society of North America, and various state medical associations.

 

 Dr. Hartford credits his achievement to God’s grace, the love of amazing parents, and the loving care of friends and mentors. He enjoys playing jazz piano, writing, traveling, and spending time with his family when he is not working. He aspires to continue delivering exceptional, innovative treatment to all of his patients, to foster future generations, and to make constructive contributions to our society.
