Phoenix, Arizona, United States – 04-18-2022 (PR Distribution™) –
Founder of IPCWell, Dr. Buffy Lloyd-Krejci, announces the launch of her much anticipated book, BROKEN: How the Global Pandemic Uncovered a Nursing Home System in Need of Repair and the Heroic Staff Fighting for Change.
BROKEN exposes an industry in dire need of a massive policy overhaul. In the midst of the Covid pandemic and studying the spread of infectious diseases in nursing homes in the United States, Dr. Buffy (as she is referred to by her clients) discovered extreme inadequacies in the care of our elderly.
Travel with her to over two hundred nursing homes across the country as these deadly problems are brought into stark relief by the pandemic. Through interviews with patients, healthcare workers, advocate groups, and regulatory agencies, discover the critical flaws in a system that was set up to fail.
“Our elderly loved ones deserve to live out their final days with dignity and respect, not to be left alone to die in a broken system.” Dr. Buffy said.
Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, infectious diseases ran rampant in US nursing homes. Between one and three million infections resulted in 380,000 deaths among nursing home residents each year. This is all due to the nursing home industry’s struggles with infection prevention and control practices (IPC).
Author of The White House Doctor: My Patients Were Presidents, a Memoir, Connie Mariano, MD endorsed the book, saying, “Caregivers in group healing residences must balance compassion against policies and laws that penalize them. This book offers a solution to the problem!”
In February 2022, President Biden called on Congress to provide $500 million to fund Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services health and safety inspection in nursing homes. We need a better way to protect nursing home residents.
By investing taxpayer money in programs that are designed to support nursing homes in improving their processes around staff education, infection control procedures, and other important areas, we can turn the tide on nursing home care.
Dr. Buffy Lloyd-Krejci is one of the nation’s foremost authorities on infection prevention and control in nursing homes and long-term care facilities. Her Phoenix-based practice, IPCWell, is devoted to reducing infections, antibiotic resistance, re-admissions, and death in healthcare settings across the country and around the world. A frequent contributor and interview source for national and trade press concerning infection prevention, control, and mitigation, she has appeared in Cambridge University Press, in Skilled Nursing News, and on National Public Radio, among others.
